The World Merino Insight

is a new and exciting sheep industry event for anyone involved in the world's sheep, sheep meat, and wool industry. It is a six day program that promises to deliver a memorable and worthwhile experience.

Every 4 Years

Designed to run every four years in a biennial rotation with the World Merino Conference, the World Merino Insight is a practically oriented event with the focus being on networking with delegates from across the globe, as well as attending some of Australia’s best Ram sales.

International Speakers

The insight program will also include a ‘conference’ day where delegates will be able to partake in presentations by some of the most influential industry leaders from not only Australia, but also internationally.

At the completion of judging delegates are invited to attend a cocktail function in the Stud Sheep Pavilion at the Royal Adelaide Show in a celebration of the 2016 feature breed, Merino Sheep. This function will give delegates the opportunity to network with a large number of breeders and will also feature a fashion parade with fashion presented by TAFE SA, AWI and other fashion producers from across Australia.

SA Stud Merino and Poll Merino Ram Sale

Registered delegates will be invited to attend the SA Stud Merino and Poll Merino Ram Sale, which is one of the world’s highest-quality sheep sales. In recent years, each sale has seen about 100 of the world’s best Merino rams offered to enthusiastic bidding. Merino South Australia co-ordinates the sale with the sale agents; Elders and Landmark, and the body has been delighted to report increasing sale averages and exceptional clearance rates across the last decade. Held in the historic Stud Sheep Pavilion at the Adelaide Showgrounds during the Royal Adelaide Show, the sale has attracted purchasers from across the globe.

Transport to and from the venue will be provided for registered delegates, but all catering will be at the delegates own cost throughout the day.

INTERNATIONAL DELEGATES

ELECTRICITY

Australia’s electricity voltage for domestic use is AC 240 volts, 50 cycles. Most hotels have provision for AC 110 volts in the rooms and/or can provide adaptors.

WATER

Tap water is filtered, fresh and safe to drink. It conforms to Australian and international drinking water standards.

TIME ZONE

Adelaide’s time zone is GMT + 9.5 hours. Adelaide is based on Central Standard Time and observes daylight saving time from early October to mid-April, when clocks are advanced one hour.

MEDICAL & EMERGENCY SERVICES

As medical services are not provided free to visitors, it is strongly recommended that health insurance is arranged before arrival. Visitors requiring pharmaceuticals after normal shopping hours should check with their hotel reception or the local Yellow Pages under ‘Chemists’. Phone 13 14 44 for police assistance or 000 for emergencies. From mobile phones, the emergency telephone number is 112.

CLIMATE

Adelaide boasts a Mediterranean climate, perfect for enjoying the great Australian outdoors. Alfresco dining, festivals, sport and fun in the sun is the way of life in Adelaide. The average temperature ranges from a mild 15°C (58°F) mid-winter in July, to a delightful 29°C (84°F) mid-summer average in January.

DRIVING

Reciprocal driving rights exist between Australia and overseas countries. Your driver’s licence must be current. Australian drivers travel on the LEFT hand side of the road and our speed limits are strictly enforced. For more information about driving on SA roads, please visit the SA Motoring website.

SHOPPING

Visitors to Adelaide are able to shop within the central business district or in one of the many suburban shopping centres. Shopping hours in the greater Adelaide shopping district (comprising central and metropolitan shopping districts a): CBD Monday to Thursday until 7pm, Friday to 9pm, Saturday until 5pm and Sunday 11am–5pm. For the suburbs: Monday to Wednesday and Friday until 5pm, Thursday to 9pm, Saturday until 5pm, and Sunday 11am–5pm. Except for Sundays or when government imposes restrictions, there are no regulations on opening times but, in general, it is 9am. For stores in shopping centres- the centres’ core trading hours apply. Duty free stores are located at the International Airport and at various locations within the CBD.

TAXES

The Goods and Services Tax is a broad based tax of 10 per cent on most supplies of goods and services supplied in Australia. GST replaces wholesale sales tax, which was applied at varying rates to a range of products. GST exemptions include food, health services and international airfares. All international delegates, apart from New Zealand citizens, must obtain a Visa or Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) before travelling to Australia. Please ensure you organise your documentation well in advance of travel.

Australia’s Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) is an electronically-stored authority for travel to Australia for a short-term tourist or business entry. ETAs are issued within seconds of being requested through computer links between the Australian Immigration Department, travel agents, airlines and specialist service providers around the world. Over 30 countries around the world have access to the free ETA system.

Conference delegates from non-ETA countries will need to obtain a Business (short stay) visa, even if some tourism activities are planned for part of the stay in Australia. It is called a 456 visa if it is issued as a label into a passport. TELEPHONE

Australia has a modern telephone system with wide mobile phone coverage. For international dialling direct call ‘0011’ followed by the country code, area code and then the local number. To call Australia from overseas the access code is ‘61’ and Adelaide’s area code is ’08’.

BANKING HOURS

Banking hours in Adelaide are Monday to Thursday 9.30am–4pm, Friday 9.30am–5pm. Most banks provide convenient automatic teller machines. Foreign currency exchange is available during trading hours.

CREDIT CARDS

The practice of payment by credit card is widely accepted throughout Australia. The most common types of cards used in Australia are Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Diners Club.

LANGUAGE

English is the language of Australia. For an interpreter, call 13 14 50 (24 hours).

TRAVELLER'S CHEQUES

Traveller’s cheques can be changed at trading banks, large city hotels and selected trading establishments.

TIPPING & GRATUITIES

Employees in Australia do not depend on tips or gratuities as part of their income. However, it is practiced as a personal choice to tip if the service received has been exceptional.

BIOSECURITY

Entries of Merino livestock to World Merino Insight Merino display activities will only be accepted from breeders who can provide a National Sheep Health Statement (SHS) which states that the flock is in the Sheep Market Assurance Program (SheepMAP) and/or can provide proof that the animals to be exhibited are approved vaccinates (as defined in the explanatory notes of the SHS) at the time of entry. Exhibitors must provide a completed National SHS and/or an approved vaccination declaration in the entry form.

The sheep flocks that have a current Ovine Johne’s Disease (OJD) status of infected or suspected of being infected with OJD, or Sheep lice, Footrot, or Ovine Brucellosis are not permitted entry to any World Merino Insight activity.

SheepMAP-entry is permitted for sheep from the following flock classifications – MN1, MN2, MN3 or MN1-V, MN2-V, MN3-V.

Sheep NOT in SheepMAP but from areas that have Regional Biosecurity Plan must be approved vaccinates and be accompanied by proof of approved vaccination declaration.

Important: Victorian, WA and NSW sheep from areas that do not have Regional Biosecurity Plan sheep must originate from a SheepMAP flock and be accompanied by proof of approved vaccination declaration.
